NEW YORK GOLF TIPS

Helpful Hints For All New York City Golfers

HITTING IT RIGHT!

Every new golfer hits the ball right.   Balls that go right are either pushed or sliced.  Pushed shots go right, as soon as they leave the clubface.  Sliced shots start out straight, then curve to the right, either gently or dramatically.  Most golfers start out by pushing the ball, later on they slice it.   It's helpful to view shots hit to the right as a necessary part of the golf learning process.

This tip focuses on how to stop pushing the ball.  Start by checking your grip pressure.  Beginners often apply a death grip to the club trying to control it.  A tight grip keeps the clubface open through impact and pushes the ball to the right.  The solution is to soften your grip; not an easy thing to do.  But a lighter grip pressure will allow the hands to work together, delivering a square clubface to the ball.  This crucial hand action is known as the Crossover.

On a scale of 1 to 10, don't ever allow your overall grip pressure to rise above a 6.  Light grip pressure is the best way to promote a crossover and eliminate pushed golf shots.

Modest grip pressure =

Squared clubface =

Straight shots every time.

Light grip pressure promotes a wrist action known as the crossover.   The hands roll over, you feel a wrist snap, and ball goes straight.  It's hard to trust the feeling at first, but with practice this hand action will feel natural, even liberating!

Practice The Crossover

Lift right thumb & forefinger

Make a practice swing

Feel the wrists snap over

Try this drill to practice the crossover.  Form your new and softer grip.  Focus on applying pressure with the back three fingers of the left hand (for right handed golfers) Keep the right palm pressed over your right thumb.  Lift your right thumb and forefinger off the club.  With your thumb and forefinger off the club, make some practice swings.  You'll feel the crossover.  The hands will take on a new life of their own.  Feel the snap of the wrists.  Repeat the drill until you get comfortable with the feeling.  Hit some balls using this drill.  The ball will go straight.  If it goes right, monitor your grip pressure; keep it modest, so the hands can work together.  Go with the flow that is the Crossover.  You'll never push the ball again.  And if you do, you'll know why.
