HOW TO GET STARTED IN GOLF

  TAKE GOLF LESSONS

Swinging a golf club looks easier than it is.  It's nearly impossible to learn on your own.  Golfers who learn on their own or rely on friends for tips often develop bad habits that are very hard to break.

The best way to ;earn is to have a qualified teacher show you the basics of proper grip, good posture, correct ball placement, and swing  technique.

Usually, after 5 to 10 weekly private lessons, most beginners will have enough confidence to join  their friends on the driving range or golf course.

  PRACTICE

You only learn what you practice.  Try and practice a minimum of 1-hour for every lesson  you take.  Space lessons a week apart so your mind and body have time to absorb new swing thoughts.

In the beginning, don't base your progress on how far the ball goes.  Instead, concentrate on getting the ball airborne.  Accuracy and distance will follow.

You can practice at Chelsea Piers and Randall's Island.

  LEARN PUTTING & CHIPPING

Everyone wants to break 100. The fastest way to reach this goal is by learning short game skills.

Putting and chipping are easy skills to learn.  That's because there is no pressure to hit the ball hard or far.

Here's the good news for New Yorkers.  You can practice putting and chipping at home. All you need is a little space with carpeting.

Make sure to ask your teacher to include the short game in your instruction.

  WATCHING GOLF ON TV

Watch the pros at work. You'll recognize many of the same things that you are working on.   it's important to see that even the pros struggle sometimes.  Developing the proper mental attitude towards the ups and downs of the game can help you learn patience, which you need to grow as a golfer.

Be a fan.  Pick a favorite player, mimic their swing, follow them all season.

Learn and practice golf with a friend so you'll have someone to share the experience with.

  BUYING GOLF CLUBS

Take your time when buying golf clubs.  Trust your instincts to help pick clubs that look and feel great,  A few golf lessons can help you test drive the clubs of your choice.

If you don't want to buy a full set of golf clubs,  buy a  6 or 7 iron.   You can learn and practice with a single club.  When you are ready to play, you can buy a set from a golf  store or online retailer. For more information  about buying your first set of golf clubs, go to our tips on buying clubs or click on one of the golf advertisers links below.

  PLAYING GOLF

A good place to test your game is at the local pitch & putt.  Several courses can be found online or listed in the local yellow pages.

These courses are shorter, making  them ideal venues for beginners.  You'll do better playing a pitch & putt course where expectations match the level of play.

If you play a full sized course with strangers, let them know that you are a beginner.  Chances are, you'll be made to feel welcome, because everyone knows how hard it is to start playing golf.
